Siemens Gamesa transformed its traditional process of wind turbine blade inspection requiring technicians to rappel down a stopped turbine in remote areas to a digitalized solution called Hermes using autonomous drones. The aircraft capture high-resolution images quickly, while the solution analyses images for potential blade damage.
The company is migrating it to Microsoft Azure and infusing it with Azure AI to process image recognition in order to further streamline and speed up blade inspections. AI image recognition can stitch images into an accurate model of an entire rotor in 34 seconds. The same job with manual stitching takes four to six hours and could lead to errors.
