    The power network is the most critical and attacked pieces of infrastructure. Following Russia’s military aggression and cyberwarfare on Ukraine, European businesses have acknowledged the need to strengthen cyber-defense capacities. This panel debate will address the challenges for the power sector to tackle the growing sources & nature of cyber threats, and how effective policies enable reducing vulnerabilities.

    If scaled across industries, digital technologies could deliver up to 20% of the 2050 reduction needed to hit the IEA’s net-zero trajectories. European programmes provide many funding opportunities and support mechanisms, yet the next step is to go “from first sale to full scale”. This panel debate will address the policy uptake, market outreach, and societal deep dive necessary to the scale up, scale down and scale deep of digital solutions across the power sector.

Vincent Berrutto is the Head of Unit responsible for research, innovation, digitalisation, and competitiveness at the European Commission Directorate General for Energy (DG ENERGY). His Unit aims to support R&I in clean energy, foster digital energy services, and improve EU’s competitiveness, with the long-term goal to decarbonise Europe by 2050. Prior to this, he was heading the Unit in charge of energy efficiency at the Executive Agency for Small and Medium-size Enterprises (EASME). He also dealt earlier with clean energy issues in other services of the European Commission, as well as in the French government. He is a civil engineer with a MSc and a PhD in building science

Luís Cunha holds a degree in Electrical Engineering at University of Porto (FEUP), a MsC in Information Management at Universidade de Aveiro (UA) and a post-graduation in business administration (AESE). Currently, he is director of European Projects and Policies at E-REDES, the mainland DSO in Portugal. With an extensive experience in energy sector, he has been working for the last years on many of the challenges brought forward by the energy transition, both at political and strategical level, representing the company in the main European associations (E.DSO and new EU DSO Entity), as well as coordinating the implementation of several initiatives on the future of system operations.

Gianni Ceneri is a Network Technologies Manager and engineer with more than 17 years of experience in the energy industry. Mr. Ceneri, who joined ENEL Group in 2004, is currently the CTO in Gridspertise, a company of the Global Infrastructure and Networks Business Line. Mr. Ceneri is in charge for ensuring the design, development and evolutions of Gridspertise’s technological solutions for the electricity distribution business with a specific focus over the implementation of Smart Grid frameworks and leveraging innovation in the energy business. Along years, Mr. Ceneri has contributed to the extension of the organization’s market leadership in the Smart Metering and Smart Grids sector through an unyielding commitment to innovation and engineering excellence. Mr. Ceneri had international professional experiences both in Europe (Spain, Netherlands), Far East (PRC) and Latin America focused on the development, manufacturing and certification of smart metering products.

Mr. Ceneri has managed many massive rollouts of Smart Metering solutions around the worlds with main focus on the piloting phases in order to validate the technologies before the handover to normal operations.

Mr. Ceneri is currently a member of “European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization” (CENELEC) and “Comitato Elettrotecnico Italiano” (CEI) committed to the development of national and international standards of measuring instruments and smart metering. Mr. Ceneri is also member of the Board of Directors of the “Meters and More” Association.

Mr. Ceneri holds a Summa Cum Laude Master’s degree in electronic engineering and telecommunications from “La Sapienza” University of Rome.

Nuno Medeiros has a master’s degree in electrical and Computers Engineering with a major in Energy from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) in 2008. End of 2011, he became a Master of Science in Information Technology - Information Security (MSIT-IS) from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Science – Cyber Security from Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.

From September 2009, he started working for EDP Distribuição joining the department of Automation and Telecontrol, which was responsible for the mission critical systems of the Portuguese DSO. Prior to December 2011, he was responsible for managing and leading projects for the SCADA/DMS infrastructure. After that, he worked as a Cybersecurity officer for SCADA/DMS systems and Smart Grid projects.

In 2017 he became head of the Cyber Security Department at EDP Distribuição, which is responsible for the end-to-end security architecture, coordinating and defining security and privacy requirements for products and processes, and maintaining the mission critical security level through a risk-based approach.

Since the beginning of 2020, he leads the “IT/OT Strategy and Cybersecurity” unit, responsible for defining and developing the architecture, platforms, applications, connectivity and IT/OT infrastructures of EDP Distribuição, in an integrated context of cybersecurity and resilience, ensuring the support to the company’s digital strategy.

He is an industry representative in several working groups and projects at European level, coordinator of the EUTC and EDSO Cybersecurity groups; and founding representative and current board member of the EE-ISAC.

He is regularly invited as a speaker at several European Conferences allowing him to share his vision and the path traced by E-REDES on the topics of Cybersecurity and Privacy.

Loïc is currently Head of Group Innovation at Elia Group, composed of 2 Transmission System Operators: 50Hertz in Germany and Elia in Belgium. In the group, the innovation team is leading the exploration, testing and validation of new technologies in order to improve efficiency, flexibility and safety of the TSO activities.

Prior to Elia Group, Loïc started in energy sector at EDF Luminus where he had different functions in the optimization and trading team (short-term trading, regulation and new market implementation). He then worked in strategy consulting for McKinsey supporting global leading utilities with a strong focus on market modelling and global energy market.

Loïc Tilman holds a master degree in electro-mechanical civil engineering from the Liège University and a master degree in general management from the Louvain School of Management (Belgium).

Hafid Elabdellaoui is the VP of Cybersecurity at Oracle.  In his role, Hafid develops the cybersecurity strategy and business plan for Oracle Energy and Water and engages with Oracle customers regularly as a trusted advisor on implementing security best practices across all digital assets.

 

Most recently, Hafid served as Americas Director & Chief Security Advisor in Microsoft’s Security Solutions where he was responsible for aligning and mobilizing the Americas Chief Security Advisors team to deliver thought leadership and deep customer engagement as trusted advisors to provide strategic direction, enable customers to implement security best practices to safeguard their assets, and properly manage security risks to their organization.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Hafid served as the Chief Information Security Officer at Duke Energy where he was responsible for policy and risk management, research and development, enterprise security architecture, identity management and directory services, threat and vulnerability management, perimeter, network, and endpoint security, network defense, Incident response, and penetration testing.

Hafid holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and an MBA from Wake Forest University.

Anca Gurzu is a Brussels-based correspondent of Cipher by Breakthrough Energy. She is a climate and energy journalist with more than a decade of reporting experience spanning two continents.

Anca has been covering the ins and outs of Europe’s energy transition from the European Union capital for about eight years, five of which with POLITICO Europe. She built a reputation of delivering scoops on the EU’s challenges to green its economy and adapt to climate change, while also tying policy with on-the-ground realities through analysis and feature stories. Her reporting trips range from the Eastern European countryside to the Finnish Arctic Circle.

Prior to joining Cipher, Anca completed a fellowship in business journalism at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business together with a few other journalists from around the world. In 2019, she was one of the several energy journalists selected to participate in the Energy Journalism Initiative at Columbia University’s Center on Global Energy Policy in New York City. She also wrote about the intersection of climate and finance as a freelancer for the development publication Devex.

Anca has moderated numerous live conferences and interviewed leaders and CEOs across Europe. Before relocating to Europe, she worked as a foreign policy reporter in Ottawa, Canada, for Embassy News (now merged with the Hill Times), where she covered Canada’s immigration, trade and aid policies.

Anca holds a Master’s degree in European, Russian and Eurasian studies from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from the same university.

Kristian Ruby took over as Secretary General of Eurelectric, effective 1 January 2017. Prior to his appointment, he worked at WindEurope as part of the Executive Management team where, in his capacity as Chief Policy Officer, he was in charge of developing and implementing the political strategy of the association. Mr Ruby previously also held positions as assistant to the former European Commissioner for Climate Action, Connie Hedegaard and served, for a number of years, as a public servant in the Danish Ministries of Climate and Energy as well as Environment.

Dr Stephan Lechner, based in Luxembourg, is Director of Euratom Safeguards at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Energy. Mr Lechner also co-ordinates the policy activities for the European Commission on cybersecurity in the energy sector. Before this appointment to this position in July 2016, he was Director of the Institute for the Protection and the Security of the Citizen at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy, for more than 8 years. Before this responsibility he held various management positions in the hi-tech sector of private industries, at large international enterprises and at telecommunications operators. He managed international expert teams in Germany and in China and has more than 25 years of experience in collaborative European projects. He holds a degree in mathematics and computer sciences and a doctoral degree in cryptography.
